Metaphysical Christmas — Mary
Merry Christmas. I LOVE this time of year. I like the symbolism, the Christmas cards with long letters from friends I miss, the decorating, the music, the lights around the cacti, and the corny Christmas movies that end with fairy dust sprinkled lavishly across the tv or movie screen.
And, I enjoy revisiting the story of the birth of Jesus through the lens of the Soul. For the next few weeks I am going to write about the metaphysical meaning of Christmas. In addition, I will post meditations to move us into the energy of the story of the the Christmas story; the birth of Divine Love in human form.Today, we are going to explore the role of Mary, the mother of Jesus. As a Biblical refresher, below is the story of the angel giving Mary a heads up on what is to come.
Luke 1: 26-28
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.
You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
I have bolded some phrases above that caught my attention this year. First, the Lord is with you. Metaphysically, “Lord” means “Law.” The angel (or the Higher Consciousness within) then tells Mary, “the Law (or how The Divine works) is with you.” Contemplate this for a moment. All you and I need for the birth of The Savior, The Anointed One, The Blessing, already lives within us. It is an inside job. The angel goes on to say, “you have found favor in God.” In another translations the angel tells Mary she is prepared. How do we prepare to become a place where God impresses, activates or impregnates our Consciousness? This is where our spiritual practice comes in: meditation, study, prayer, community, tithing, and service. We ready ourselves to receive the Grace of God. Mary is perplexed because she is a virgin, or innocent. Mary isn’t the only virgin to have conceived a Savior. It is a common story line in religious literature. Virgin births can be found in: the Egyptian story of Horus, the Aztec story, Greek mythology, Roman storytelling, and Qi in Chinese mythology. When we get quiet in meditation, we become receptive to the realization that the home of the Infinite within us is always virginal and can NEVER become tainted or sullied it is always fertile.
Mary represents the feminine aspect of The Divine. The feminine is the receptive energy; willingness, openness, and acceptance. The feminine also represents The Soul (there is more about this on the video).
As the Christmas story is the story of our Soul, today I have prepared a short meditation to connect with the energy of the Mother Mary.
